ENG - After the demolition of the finger connecting the western tower with Terminal 3, the airport authority decided to renew the façade, now free from the bridge element. In agreement with the communication area managers, it was decided to create a façade that uses a so-called ledwall system. 

The tower is the intersection between airport traffic and the railway network, therefore it constitutes a point of intense flow of people, one of the most overcrowded areas of the entire airport area. The design process, considering the importance and complexity of the place, involved the careful study of the current situation, the feasibility analysis of the insertion of the new façade system, through numerous types of geometrical and load simulation. The facade is composed of a 5x14 matrix of LED panels for a total length of twenty meters and a height of five meters. Each LED panel weighs about ninety kilograms. The façade is oriented north-northwest, so the visibility of the images will be possible even in daylight conditions. RFI/LED is a new Infotainment facade system for the western tower of the Leonardo da Vinci Airport. 

The main purpose of the project is to contribute to the achievement of a new aesthetic standard for the largest Italian airport and one of the largest in Europe, recently awarded at the World Airport Awards. The idea is to create a new dramatic facade in collaboration with Informasistemi, using the already established Ledwall technique. You can ideally enjoy the experience at an airport by listening to Brian Eno's Music for Airports (1978) or something from the Blade Runner OST by Vangelis. That was the cultural premise for the discussion of the project. Essentially the key concept is the distortion of the notions of Space and Time. This is what normally happens in an airport: the sense of alienation, which is both exciting and disturbing. Today the airport has come out of its limits and has become a paradigm and precursor of what Koolhaas calls a Generic City.

You can eat flavors from all over the world. You can speak languages from all over the world. You can see images of the places you are about to reach or from which you have just returned.

ITA - Dopo la demolizione del finger che collega la torre ovest con il Terminal 3, l'autorità aeroportuale ha deciso di rinnovare la facciata, ora libera dall'elemento ponte. D'intesa con i responsabili dell'area comunicazione, si è deciso di realizzare una facciata che utilizzi un cosiddetto sistema ledwall.

La torre è l'intersezione tra il traffico aeroportuale e la rete ferroviaria, costituisce quindi un punto di intenso afflusso di persone, una delle zone più sovraffollate dell'intera area aeroportuale. L'iter progettuale, considerata l'importanza e la complessità del luogo, ha comportato l'attento studio della situazione attuale, l'analisi di fattibilità dell'inserimento del nuovo sistema di facciata, attraverso numerose tipologie di simulazione geometrica e di carico. La facciata è composta da una matrice 5x14 di pannelli LED per una lunghezza totale di venti metri e un'altezza di cinque metri. Ogni pannello LED pesa circa novanta chilogrammi. La facciata è orientata nord-nordovest, quindi la visibilità delle immagini sarà possibile anche in condizioni di luce diurna. RFI / LED è un nuovo sistema di facciata Infotainment per la torre ovest dell'Aeroporto Leonardo da Vinci.

Lo scopo principale del progetto è quello di contribuire al raggiungimento di un nuovo standard estetico per il più grande aeroporto italiano e uno dei più grandi d'Europa, recentemente premiato ai World Airport Awards. L'idea è quella di creare una nuova facciata drammatica in collaborazione con Informasistemi, utilizzando la già consolidata tecnica Ledwall. Puoi idealmente goderti l'esperienza in un aeroporto ascoltando Music for Airports (1978) di Brian Eno o qualcosa dal Blade Runner OST di Vangelis. Questa era la premessa culturale per la discussione del progetto. Essenzialmente il concetto chiave è la distorsione delle nozioni di Spazio e Tempo. Questo è ciò che normalmente accade in un aeroporto: il senso di alienazione, che è allo stesso tempo eccitante e inquietante. Oggi l'aeroporto è uscito dai suoi limiti ed è diventato un paradigma e un precursore di quella che Koolhaas chiama una città generica.
